Sunday’s classes saw the official and associate pony dressage tests where some 170 tests were ridden.

I was particularly impressed with perhaps the tiniest rider on the day, Kathleen Adriaans who after sitting on the sidelines watching her big brother Ray compete at our event for the past couple of years, finally got to have her go in the pony dressage arena with her pony Maggie. Kathleen had obviously been practicing well as she went home with a 2nd place in the Prep 1.

The Associate Preliminary
Championship, sponsored by
Fernwood was won by the little
Welsh A gelding Del-lee Pranc
(Imperial Consul/Thorpeville
Prudence), owned and ridden by
Rebecca Ross. Reserve
Champion sponsored by Hygain
went to 1st Premium pony,
Kapeta Spellbound (pictured right)
who was ridden by Belinda Smith.
Spellbound is by the super New
Forest and performance pony sire
Kapeta Faro and out of the
Thoroughbred mare Divine Magic
and he is owned by Dorothy
Horne and Kate & Ellen Sherwood.

employer, ‘The Horse Downunder Magazine’ sponsored. Jess and ‘Cooper’ took part in our biggest stallion parade yet and also put on an entertaining freestyle on Saturday evening. Reserve Champion Associate Novice, sponsored by Hygain went to the New Forest Pony gelding Habafield Pick a Beau (Ramblers Pick Another Imp/Forestvale Gaytime) and Jaklan Watts.
Sincere thanks to all of our judges and helpers who made our weekend a great success; Chris Sievers and Moya Jess and pencillor Dorothy Horne on Saturday and Judges Lou D'elia, Berni Saunders, Judy Fraser, Kerry Blackley, Maria Millikan, Jennifer Holmes and Liz Pugh on Sunday. Many thanks to the judges who supplied their own pencillors and to Tegan Wain who both pencilled and ferried our judge from Canberra, Liz Pugh, around all weekend.

I very much appreciated our Committee member Kate Sherwood for stepping in this year and organising the pencillors and helpers for me so many thanks to Kate and Ellen Sherwood. Kate's Mum Dorothy Horne has always made herself available to help out and I sincerely appreciate everything she does. Also many thanks to Claire, Jemma & Reilly Bird, Marg George, Cheryl & Jess Ellis, Sharon White, Eva Lazarus and Belinda Smith. The girls made sure our judges were looked after well and kept the tests coming in on time to our excellent scorer, Leon Baggott.

Without our super sponsorship manager, Tina Barker, this event would never get off the ground so many thanks Tina for the many phone calls and emails that she puts in over the months leading up to our event.

Our President Vin Wyles came down from Sydney to attend our event again this year and I thank him very much for all of his help and support over the weekend.

Our PA man Brian Brennan again performed another sterling job and I am sure that all of the riders very much appreciated his up to the minute advice on who should be where!

I dragged my long time friend Kaye Clark to Werribee again and I sincerely appreciate Kaye's assistance in the office. I know I can rely on her to keep the ship going if I'm off doing something else.

Many thanks to the staff at Werribee Park who had the arena's and indoor in top shape this year and to Reg Cleland for being our official measurer and staying late to height check a couple of late comers for us. We really appreciate Reg's dedication.

Again, true to our motto of presenting events for tomorrow’s champions, the Preparatory tests for riders 10 years & under were well supported
and the ideal of the classes was maintained by some very talented little combinations. The Preparatory section was sponsored by The Horse Downunder Magazine who supplied prizes and trophies and an embroidered saddleblanket and rosette to the overall Best Prep combination. The junior riders were wonderful to watch and by all accounts they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to ride at Werribee in a high level event with all the big kids. They were delighted with their prizes and ribbons and particularly their special riders bags filled with goodies. The Overall Best Preparatory combination winner was Natasha Moody and Wyann Sonic pictured right with all her lovely prizes from the Horse Downunder Magazine.

Associate Novice Champion, sponsored by Waldarrah Performance Horses was won by the lovely little part welsh/riding pony stallion Wynara
Talk of the Town (Salient Master Bronze/Sanlirra Secret Time) owned and ridden by Jessica Herring. All the way from Mt Gambier in S.A. Jess and ‘Cooper’ travelled across to support the event that her
The Official Preliminary boasted a full section this year with the Championship rug sponsored by Seven Creek Equine Veterinary Clinic being awarded to the Riding Pony gelding, Rosebrook Rhythm n Blues (Rosebrook True Blue/Rotherwell Lovelight) owned and ridden by Rebecca Farran (pictured right). Reserve Champion Official Preliminary Pony sponsored by Matitojo Palomino Pony Stud went to Anne Smiley’s Riding Pony gelding Lynlea Pantomine (Silkwood Puss ‘n Boots/Lynlea Theme).

Although the Official Novice didn’t have a large number of entries, quality far outweighed quantity with the Championship rug sponsored by Cedar Lodge Equine Products being awarded to the imported German Riding Pony FS Golden Storm (FS Golden Moonlight/FS Nanu) and his owner/rider Arkie Daddo (below right).
I remember seeing ‘Storm’ not long after he arrived in Australia after being imported by Olympic rider, Ricky MacMillan and was impressed with him then. Reserve Official Novice Pony sponsored by Matitojo Palomino Pony Stud went to the New Forest gelding Jarosite Pickason (Ramblers Pick Another Imp/ Pahake Premier) and Gabrielle George.

The Official Elementary Championship rug was sponsored by The Overflow Stud and the winner was the imported Dutch Riding Pony stallion, Flowervale Boginov (Orchards Boginov/Wilgenaar’s Jive) ridden by Danni Flood and owned by Case Wientjens and Lyn Spiers. Boginov is progressing from strength to strength in his work and also won the Elementary Freestyle on Saturday evening. Case and Lyn are great supporters of the ASPR as they travelled to Sydney in April for the 2009 NSW Pony Challenge where Boginov also won the Official Elementary Championship against a strong field of NSW ponies. Reserve Champion sponsored by Matitojo Palomino Pony Stud went to the Part Welsh gelding, Milaan Park Serenade (Glenvale Kleeshay/Milaan Park Serendipity) owned and ridden by Alex Sventek.

The Official Medium Championship rug sponsored by Tony’s Practice of Woodend was fought out between three top ponies with Wendy Kelly’s lovely Australian Pony gelding, Jobar Piano Man (Kooyong Liberace/Kooyong Victoria) coming out as the winner (pictured right). Reserve Champion went to Emma Copley’s Riding Pony gelding, View Bank Boyd (Silkwood Puss n’ Boots/View Bank Bijou). Boyd’s former owner and rider Nirelle Somerville

has been a past winner at the Victorian Pony Challenge and it is great to see Boyd’s new junior rider also achieving success with him.

Official Advanced Championship rug sponsored by Eco Animal Bedding was won by the grand old man of pony dressage, Barnon Imperial Jack (Llanarth Jack Flash Imp/Rhydlas Ramona Imp) and his life partner, Norm Clark. Norm almost didn’t make it to our event after having a bad fall of a pony several weeks ago. Norm and Jack have competed at all four Victorian Pony Challenge events for Reserve Champion Medium Pony in 2007 and 2008 so it was great to see him win a championship in possibly his last year of competition.

YOUNG PONY TRAINING DAY
18th October, 2009  -  Juravon Park, Melton

Due to the growing interest in Young Pony dressage classes, the ASPR will hold a training day where ponies
can ride the 4 and 5 yo tests in a competition environment.

An accredited Young Horse/Pony judge will provide instruction and feedback to riders and trainers and ponies can gain experience riding in an indoor arena with music and taped applause!

Dependent on interest, we may also hold a couple of associate Preliminary and Novice tests to make the day out worthwhile and dressage instruction may also be available.

If numbers allow, 3 yo ponies are also invited to participate in the 4 yo training class.

Check the ASPR web site in the coming month for more details or email aspr@iinet.net.au with your expression of interest.
Please take the time to send an email or letter to our fantastic sponsors. They very much appreciate hearing from prize winners.
