The Australian Sports Pony Registry Inc. was delighted to host the first Pony Challenge in South Australia on Sunday 9th May at the Globe Derby Equestrian Centre.

Our ASPR SA State Representative, Zena Alliu was instrumental in getting this event off the ground and without her organisation of the sponsorship, judges, helpers and a myriad other details it never would have happened.

Zena had initially tried to address the lack of a dedicated pony dressage event by running a competition herself but after several phone calls, the ASPR agreed that it was the ideal opportunity for our organisation to start our Pony Challenge events in South Australia, having already run four very successful events in Victoria and two in New South Wales.

We were delighted to receive 86 entries, with a reserve list for the inaugural event. This number of entries is some what of a record in South Australia and augers well for the future of pony dressage in that state.

The day of the event had perfect weather (always a bonus at this time of year!) and ponies were turned out beautifully. The atmosphere was very friendly with everyone enjoying themselves. It is very rewarding as an event organiser to receive positive comments from both the riders and the judges. Zena can deservedly take the credit for organising it all so well on the day.

Thorwood Sweet Briar and Kerry Glass rode two very nice tests which saw her take out the Official Preliminary Championship with scores over 70% and comments from one of the judges of "this pony has a huge future". For her efforts, Kerry took home a lovely inscribed rug and sash kindly sponsored by LW Photography together with a trophy sponsored by Naboo Dressage Ponies.

Another super pony was this year's DWTS 5 yo Young Pony winner, the Welsh C stallion Hillswood Duplicate who, with his rider Josie Chamberlain performed very correct tests to take out the Official Novice Championship. Duplicate added to his growing wardrobe with a lovely rug and sash sponsored by Browbands of Distinction and a trophy that he might sit on stable shelf donated by Naboo Dressage Ponies.

One of our smallest ponies of the day was Akeringa Allegro with his young rider, Troy Woollard. They had a very successful day winning one of their tests and the High Point Junior Award which was sponsored by Anne Smith . Another junior who had a great day was Sophie Neale with her pony Rivington Nina. This combination won the Associate Preliminary Championship inscribed rug which was sponsored by Ibn Ky Performance Ponies and a trophy sponsored by Naboo Dressage Ponies. Sophie is very much looking forward to continuing to compete in pony dressage.

The Associate Novice Championship was sponsored by Naboo Dressage Ponies and was won by Yindarla Park Pinson ridden by young Ashlee Afford.

Ebarra Jasmin and Amity Hancock travelled all the way from Kingston SE and had a successful day taking out the High Point Riding Pony Award sponsored by the RPSBS South Australian Branch and placing very well in all of her tests.

Courtney Schleter and her pony Acheron Guinevere took home the special awards of High Point Adult Rider, sponsored by Equi-Stim and High Point Welsh Pony, sponsored by Kerulen Welsh Stud.

Although there was only one competitor in the Official Elementary tests, Jo Cullen rode two solid tests on her pony Genteel Touch of Charisma to take out the rug, sash and trophy sponsored by InMotion Photography.

All Reserve Champion winners won a voucher very generously sponsored by Globe Derby Poultry Farm and the individual winners of each test all took home excellent prizes donated by our very generous sponsors.

Naboo Dressage Ponies was a major sponsor of this event and as well as sponsoring many of the Championship trophies, also sponsored the inscribed rugs for the Associate Novice and Novice Freestyle winners. The freestyle winner was also awarded a beautiful garland from Naboo Dressage Ponies.

This event could not of run without the very much appreciated assistance of Carissa Courtney who took care of all of the scoring for the event, an onerous job at the best of times. Carissa also lent her voice to the PA system when required. Many thanks to pencillors Amarlia and Dani and gear checker Karli Shannon. A huge thank you to Kate Lock, not only competing at her first event, she helped put up the arenas on Saturday and then collected tests after riding.

Also many thanks to our judges Mr Barrey Stratton, Erica Taylor, Elizabeth Rogers and Rachel Vincent for officiating at what we sincerely hope is the first of many successful Pony Challenge events in South Australia.

Congratulations to all riders and their ponies and we hope to see you all back next year.
