We could not have ordered more
impressive weather for our event this
year and how good was the venue at
Elcho Park! Leigh Harding and his team
from Friends of Elcho Park Equestrian
Centre had the grounds in tip top
condition and are to be congratulated on
their impressive venue.
I'll start off my report by thanking Judi
Tainsh from Elcho B&B for putting
myself and several of our committee up
on Saturday night and for her donation
of part of the accomodation costs. We
sincerely appreciate having such a great
place to stay and anyone attending an
event at Elcho Park would do well to
consider staying at Judi's place where she has lovely comfortable rooms plus very roomy and
impressive stables for the horses, all just around the corner from the venue.
This event could not have taken place without the very valued assistance of riders and
members who took the time to pencil, gear check and collect tests on the day. Many thanks
to Jean Dart, Sharon Banner, Lyn Spiers, Michelle Drayton, Chris Hartigan, Cait and Emma
Alexander, Kerrie Ford, Jodie Young, Mandy Heather, Sue de Reu, Simon and Michaela Bray,
Rumer & Michelle Aldous, Melissa Hadley, Wendy Higgins, Leanne Atwell, Jane Salter and
Jen Schroen. As you can see, it takes a lot of helpers to keep everything running smoothly.
Particular thanks go to our President Rossanne Mason
who organised the amazing sponsorship from Pryde's
EasiFeed and to Berni Saunders who with camera in
hand was out in the sun nearly all day taking some
great shots of the competitors.
The winner of every class got to take home a bag of
Pryde's EasiFeed with the Open Champions also
getting a bag of feed. The pony champions won a
lovely waterproof jacket from Pryde's along with a bag
of feed as well. Competitors also took the opportunity
of trying out samples of the various Pryde's feeds on
their ponies, all specifically formulated to suit the
individual requirements of your horse or pony.
Many thanks to our judges Gisela Nilsson-Harding
and Deirdre Stock who flew down from Sydney on
Saturday to officiate at our event. Also to Jan Smith,
Maria Millikan, Rosemary Dalton, Glen Gault, Gill
Suban, Kathryn Doreshenko-Pempel, Sylvia Deppler
and to Deborah Hamid for judging the Para Equestrian
classes for us. This was the first time we had held
Para Equestrian classes and it was a delight to meet
the riders and their horses and we were happy to give
riders the opportunity to have a practice run at their
tests before the all important selection trial to be held
in December at the Saddleworld Dressage Festival.
We were extremely happy with entry numbers this
year considering several other major events also
scheduled for the same weekend. Entries were up on
last year and we look forward to this event growing
even more in 2012 as not only is it the final qualifier for
the Saddleworld Dressage Festival, the ASPR team
has developed a reputation for extremely well run
events offering great prizes.
And of course, coming from the pony perspective as we do, the ponies did very well on the weekend when compared to the horse scores.
The Welsh D stallion Westbury Spitfire (Bookra Sports Edition/Westbury Sybil), ridden by Kristy Sparkes and owned by Paul Milvain won the Pony Preliminary Championship with a total score from the 1B & 1D of 150.564% and if horses and ponies were combined, would have still taken out the championship. Reserve Champion Preliminary Pony was Yarramee Fancy Pants (Andlyn Park Playmate/Brookfield Emmadonna), owned and ridden by Sharon McCombe would also have taken out the outright Reserve Champion.
The lovely New Forest gelding, Habafield Hooray Henry (Merrie Meon Imp/Erinskay Lementyme) won Champion Novice Pony and would have placed 6th in a very strong field of Novice Horses.
Champion Elementary Pony was the super Australian Pony Tweed Valley Braveheart (Tweed Valley Squire/Kar-Trice Cassandra) ridden by Emily van Sonsbeek and owned by Erin Bullock. Emily has had a busy few months recently returning from Dubbo and the National Showjumping titles after making a trip to South Africa to compete on showjumping ponies. Tweed Valley Braveheart scored a total of 127.383% which would have seen her placed Reserve Champion with the Elementary horses.
Reserve Champion Elementary Pony was the Welsh Arab cross gelding, Buckwell Park Casino (Buckwell Park Copenhagen/Askari's Jewel) ridden by Mandy Heather.
Champion Medium Pony was Kerrie Ford's delightful Welsh Cob stallion, Fleur de Lys Jack Daniel (Barnon Imperial Jack/Acheron Dol) Kerrie has done a wonderful job with Daniel taking him right through the ranks from a green pony to where he is now.
Unfortunately there were no Advanced ponies competing this weekend.
Acceptance of entries to the 2012 Dressage & Jumping With The Stars Young Pony classes now require ponies to gain at least two scores of 6.5 in YP qualifiers.
Winning the 4 yo YP qualifer was the Welsh B gelding, Rivington Windrow (Panteg Gambler's Luck/Rivington Windglass) ridden and owned by Rebecca Jones. This delightful 12.2hh pony also won the 4 yo YP qualifier at the 2011 Equine Chia Victorian Pony Challenge.
With a huge improvement in performance from the August Pony Challenge, and also gaining a qualifying score was second placegetter, the warmblood/welsh cross gelding, Champagne Therapy (Bookra The Coalman/Woodmount Fiesta) ridden by Ashleigh Atwell.
Winning the 5 yo YP qualifier and also the winner of the 5 yo YP class at the August event was Sharon McCombe's up to height arabian derivative gelding, Yarramee Fancy Pants (Andlyn Park Playmate/Brookfield Emadonna).
Although the only competitor, gaining a qualifying score in the 6 yo YP class was Wendy Higgins with her Welsh Cob gelding, Hillswood Red Comet (Llanina Merlyn/Neika Portia).
