Why an Australian Sports Pony?
ASPR Events

As adults who ride, train and/or breed ponies, both for our own enjoyment and particularly to cultivate super ponies for the current generation of child riders, members of the ASPR see a definite need in Australia for ponies which are purpose bred to fill the sports pony niche. As an example, pony dressage, already established and flourishing in Europe, is now beginning to make headway in our country. However, the ponies Australia has formerly bred (very successfully we might add) for the pony hack ring are, in the main, unlikely to produce the "cadence" or exceptional measured movement required of an international standard dressage pony.

When it comes to the current world leaders in the production of sport horses and internationally acclaimed riders, we look to the Northern European countries as to what they are doing right. Without doubt they are breeding the ultimate sports horses. They also educate their riders from a young age in terms of classical technique on purpose-bred and trained ponies - in dressage, jumping and eventing. These young riders then enter maturity with a feel and balance for the great power and large stride of the purpose-bred sport horse.

We believe that Australia has what it takes to produce a high quality sports pony to satisfy the needs of either the child rider with Olympic aspirations, or the child who simply requires a great little sports pony with the correct feel and balance on which they can learn to ride, thus preparing them for the time when they make the transition to a larger mount.

Further, for a significant number of adult riders, a big moving sports pony with a generous temperament is a very sensible alternative to a large horse.
